The Fabric Stash

Right after B-House and I were married, I discovered that our Laura Ashley store was closing its doors at the mall.  I had drooled over Laura Ashley fabrics for years, but knew they were too expensive for me to ever decorate with.  The close-out prices I was finding at the store, though, were an unbelievable deal.  I was so excited!…a brand-new homemaker, on a limited budget, finding great deals on lovely fabric…I couldn’t ask for more!

B-House and I still laugh about my “shopping spree.”  We went to the mall and split up – he on his way to the Apple store and I on my way to browse the Laura Ashley store.  After looking through all they had to offer, I meekly chose a few fabrics to buy and went to find B-House.  When he looked in my bag, he said, “That’s all?  Don’t you want any more?”  Surprised, I said, “Yes, but I wasn’t sure if I should get more.”

He sent me back to the store on my own, reminding me that this was my big chance to get the fabrics I had always wanted at the price we could afford.  “Buy some for now and some to use in the future,” he said.

This second time through the store concluded with another bag full of lovely fabrics.  Excitedly, I went back to show him and tell him all my plans for them.  He looked in my bag and said, “That’s all?”  And I said, “Well, there were a couple more that I liked.”  This time he went back to the store with me.

I have many lengths of fabric still to put to use (they are stored in a suitcase), but I also have many hand-made quilts, curtains, and pillows made out of my treasured Laura Ashley fabrics.  This last summer, I made duvet covers for the girls’ princess bedroom.  They chose their own room color – a very light purple.  I was so excited when they chose purple because I had a good amount of purple fabric that I had bought in hopes of someday having little girls.

There’s nothing fancy about them, but here’s Taylor’s duvet…

and here’s Emma’s duvet…

The girls were both excited about watching the “duvet-making process” and it was delightful for me to finally have a little girls’ room to decorate in purple.  Seeing the two of them snuggled in their blankets at night is a lovely sight.

Nothing like a fresh pretzel from the town bakery!

As I tucked the girls into bed tonight, I was blessed by a few of Taylor’s words…

“Can I hug you forever and ever and ever?” she asked as she squeezed my neck.  “I love you, Mommy.”

I am humbled by this beautiful gift she gave me.

The Backyard

The girls’ grandparents gave them money for their birthdays last year in order for us to buy them a big toy.  We finally bought a swingset and slide!  B-House built it, with help from friends and neighbors, and labored to stain the wood, too.  He also planted the grass, with lots of help from church folks!

For months, we have been talking with the girls about having grass and a swingset, even before we saw the apartment in April (we moved in in June).  Finally, the grass has grown and the swingset is up!  We are all thrilled!

It’s funny how something as simple as a grassy backyard can be such a blessing!

The slide is REALLY steep – and fast!  Emma was the first to go down and she zipped down so quickly that she flew off the end and landed flat on her back.  Looking up at the sky, she calmly said, “That was fun.”  Yet, when we asked her if she wanted to do again, she said (very calmly again), “No.”  B-House and I are still cracking up whenever we talk about it!

Not Again. No Way.

Taylor talked me into allowing her and Emma to finger paint yesterday.  She was given these paints on her 2nd birthday (and she’s now 4 1/2), which shows how enthusiastic I am to paint!  🙂

I was ready for the worst – the girls put on old clothes, we went outside to do the deed, and I brought lots of towels.  Well, here’s how it started…

Cute, huh?  Well, here’s how it ended…

“Oh my!  Taylor, don’t paint yourself!!!  Just the paper!  Just the paper!  Emma, don’t drip paint on the ground!”  I found myself exclaiming.

Whew!  The stress was great, but the girls had a great time and later got to sit in the shower while I hosed them off.  Amazingly, the paint came off of everything – clothes, skin, tile, table.

And the best thing?  They used up all the finger paint!!

Emma Loves Babies

The other day, Taylor suggested (again) that we have a “baby brother.”  She was a bit disappointed at not getting one, but is persistent that we will have one soon.

Emma, on the other hand, when I asked her if she wanted a baby brother, too, said that she wanted a “baby like Mommy’s.”  She can be quite persistent sometimes about getting her fair share of baby time.  She often asks to hold the baby and just can’t seem to “mother” baby Eleanor enough.

Today Emma sat right next to the baby on the back porch and told me she was “watching the baby.”  She didn’t sit down until she had covered the baby adequately with a little blanket.

Here are just a few pictures, in chronological order, of Emma “taking care” of baby Eleanor…

Washing Dishes

IMG_0310

I thought I would really, really dislike not having a dishwasher, but I’ve found washing dishes by hand to be not so bad after all.  It gets the dishes done faster than a dishwasher can and I’m not left with a whole dishwasher to empty (one of my least favorite household chores).  Big parties scare me a bit, though.  🙂

Play-Dough Time!

I can’t believe we don’t play with play-dough more often!  The girls always love it!

Emma’s always one to share…even her favorite play-dough balls.  🙂

The New Cut and My Cuties

IMG_9126

Here I am with the smallest of my cutie pies.  If Emma knew I had called her a cutie pie, she would probably say, “I’m not a cootie pie.  I’m Emmmmmma.”

After Church Tradition

When we come home from church, which is close to 1:00 p.m., our tradition has become to let the girls watch a video. (It gives me a chance to finish up our lunches, put things away, change clothes, feed the baby, etc. before naptime). This last Sunday, B-House joined the girls and drew them like a magnet. 🙂
